Assignment 1, Part 2: Reason for Taking the Class
As a bioengineer, I
am exposed to many different areas of engineering. Bioengineering is very
diverse field, and it can include a little bit about mechanical engineering,
electrical engineering, materials science, etc.
I am passionate about innovation in the medical devices and healthcare
fields. Last semester, I worked with a team to prototype a design for
noninvasively measuring venous oxygen saturation, which is the percentage of
oxygen in the blood after your body has used up as much oxygen as it can (so
basically, right before it goes back into the heart/ lungs). Currently, the
gold standard for doing this is using a catheter and sampling the venous blood.
However, catheterization is invasive and takes about 30 minutes to an hour to
insert. Also, once the blood is sampled, it needs to be taken into the
laboratory for analysis, which adds to the time required to provide results.
Thus, my team researched possible alternatives to find this value noninvasively.
We also built a prototype to test out our ideas. As an engineer, I will be
working with a team to invent medical devices. Thus, I felt that taking a
patenting class in college was a good way to start learning about the process
of protecting one's intellectual property. I am excited to learn more in the
class! Looking forward :)
Assignment 1, Part 1: About Myself!
Hi! My name is
Manali and I am a fourth year undergraduate student studying Bioengineering at
UC Berkeley. I'm graduating in May, and I'm pretty excited about that. :) This
is my second time doing a blog, but I have never done a blog that incorporated
videos-- so I am pretty excited about this!
First, a little bit
about me: Some of my hobbies include
painting, beading, and pottery. I paint large windows at the Foothill Dining
Commons. I also really like to swim (although, I haven't swam in a while). I
have always really wanted one of those endless pools, which cost a couple
thousand dollars. So, I got to save up for that! In terms of food, I don't
really have a favorite food, and I 'm a pretty picky eater. I love drinking cold milk. Pretty random, I
guess. Let's see…what else. I love candles! And ribbons too. And silk or
pashmina scarves. And shopping-- that is definitely my favorite past time. I
also love foggy and misty weather. It makes me feel so cheerful for some
reason. It is as if the entire world feels so clean and calm. Yup, so that is
pretty much all anyone needs to know about me…jk there is so much more. Talk to
me! I love talking about the most random things and meeting new people.
